The Benefits of Tins for my Brand and Why Tighter Packaging Rules Are Making them a More Popular Choice

Between rising costs, shifting consumer expectations and a wave of new recyclability regulations, businesses across the UK are taking a hard look at what they put their products in, and a growing number are landing on the humble tin.

Here's why metal packaging is quietly winning, and what the changing rules mean for your brand.


How New Policies Work in Favour of Tins

The biggest shift isn't in fashion; it's in policy. From April 2026, the UK's Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme stopped charging flat fees and started modulating them by recyclability.


Under the new Recyclability Assessment Methodology, every packaging format is given a Red, Amber or Green rating: widely recyclable materials earn a fee discount, while hard-to-recycle formats face a surcharge that climbs year on year.


At the same time, the Plastic Packaging Tax keeps rising - £228.82 per tonne from April 2026 for packaging containing less than 30% recycled plastic (up from £200 per tonne back in April 2020)- and from April 2027 the definition of what counts as "recycled content" tightens further still.


The direction we're heading in is clear: packaging that's easy to recycle costs you less, and packaging that isn't costs you more - every single year.


That's exactly where tin shines (I was quite pleased with that as I wrote it!). Steel and aluminium are among the most widely collected and genuinely recyclable materials in the UK waste stream, and they can be recycled again and again with no loss of quality. For a business trying to keep compliance costs down and green credentials up, a well-made tin is one of the easiest wins on the shelf.


If replacing plastic with metal drops your total plastic packaging use below the 10-tonne annual threshold, you no longer need to track recycled content percentages, gather supply chain evidence, or file quarterly returns with HMRC.


Sustainability your customers can actually see

Regulations are one thing, but tins also pass the test that really matters: the one in your customer's hands.


A plastic wrapper goes straight in the bin. A beautiful tin gets kept and often ends up getting reused, often for storing small bits and bobs; so a little piece of your brand lives on long after the product inside is gone. That's a second (and third, and fourth) life that no flexible plastic can offer, and a daily, quiet reminder of who made it.


For brands building a sustainability story, metal makes that story easy to tell and easy to believe.


Premium by default

There's a reason luxury teas, chocolates, candles and skincare reach for tins. The moment a customer feels that weight and hears that satisfying close, perceived value goes up. Add debossing, hot-foil detailing or a custom shape, and a simple container becomes a genuine brand asset - packaging people photograph, share on their Instagram feeds and don't want to chuck out after Christmas.
